Boy was I wrong. College Dating is like most things in this world. It is messy, unpredictable, unreliable, and can sometimes be downright cruel. I thought that guys would want to be in relationships, and that it is a place where you meet your future husband. At least in high school all your friends knew everything about the guy you were dating and your pretty got the whole truth about the person. In college it is really scary thing to put yourself out there and attempt to date someone you know nothing about.

Messenger Over the past few years, there has been a steady flow of articles in magazines, newspapers and online news outlets examining what hookup culture on college campuses means for sexual norms and behaviors among young adults, particularly young women. Some writers suggest women who participate in hookup culture often feel like outsiders struggling to navigate a territory where young men set the terms of sexual activity. Still, with similar proportions of college men and women hooking up, others wonder if hookup culture might be liberating for young women.
On the one hand, college hookup culture allows women to explore their sexuality in ways that previous generations of women could not. As a sociologist who studies gender and sexuality, I decided to explore the status of the traditional sexual double standard in college hookup culture. Do college students today support it, and if so, to what degree? So, what does all this subsequent research say about the status of this double standard today?
Some studies indicate the traditional double standard is still relevant. Others indicate it has been surpassed by an egalitarian standard where men and women are judged similarly for engaging in similar behaviors and that some college students even use a reverse sexual double standard to judge men more harshly than women. Why are these findings so mixed? One explanation is that contemporary college students tend to believe that the traditional double standard exists in society, but not in their own minds.
This can have real implications for power dynamics in sexual encounters. In their interviews with college women, sociologists Laura Hamilton and Elizabeth A. These women believed the traditional double standard gave men power in hookups and justified the disrespectful treatment of women.

Ruling Out Rape. by Lisa Wade, Brian Sweeney In today’s campus hookup culture, alcohol and sex often go together, and both can be rewarding experiences for young adults. I drink vodka, and it tastes like a slap. There are bodies on all sides of me — belly buttons lit by neon, glints of fingernails and teeth pushing against each other. Everyone is drunk and entwined. I fumble for the stairs. I need space, and time, and unsticky air. I slip through the rows of couples wound around each other, people I recognize from classes grinding in the colored lights. At the time, rape was quite clearly regulated in some states: She was saying something far more provocative: No matter the law, certain strategies for gaining sexual compliance are sometimes allowed, and certain people can get away with sexual coercion and violence more often and more easily than others. To understand student experiences, I visited 24 institutions, read hundreds of firsthand accounts of hookup culture published in college newspapers, collected student journals about life in the first year and reviewed the now-extensive work on hookup culture by social scientists, which included survey data summarizing 24, student responses.
Hookup culture and the sexual assault epidemic seemed to be two looming forces on the same campus, in the same bedrooms, existing in parallel but never openly intersecting.
According to the U. Department of Justice, one in five women who attend college will be the victim of a completed or attempted sexual assault, compared to one in six women in the general population. Up to 90 percent of these women will know their attacker. Only about half will identify their experience as assault and fewer than 5 percent will report their experience to campus authorities or the police. Four percent of college men also report being sexually assaulted, overwhelmingly by other men.

Does your friend experience marginalization based on their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, class, sexual orientation, gender, or something else? Cultural stereotypes about which kinds of people are likely to commit or experience sexual violence may make it more challenging for your friend to share what happened.
By demonstrating to your friend that you believe and trust them, you make it easier for them to get support. Please keep in mind that assault can take many forms. As with any challenging situation, every person responds to sexual violence differently and will need different kinds of support. Your friend might want to talk all about the experience, or they might not want to get into details. They might want you to stay with them, or they might prefer time alone. Listen with an open mind Avoid assumptions based on stereotypes.

New book aims to clear up ‘hookup culture’ confusion
Hookup culture A hookup culture is one that accepts and encourages casual sexual encounters, including one-night stands and other related activity, which focus on physical pleasure without necessarily including emotional bonding or long-term commitment. As a result, Garcia and others argue, young adults are physiologically able to reproduce but not psychologically or socially ready to ‘settle down’ and begin a family. Research on hookups is not seated within a singular disciplinary sphere; it sits at the crossroads of theoretical and empirical ideas drawn from a diverse range of fields, including psychology, anthropology, sociology, biology, medicine, and public health.
It is hard to make sense of the hookup culture with understanding why it exists in society and why individuals participate in the culture. Boodram, “hooking up is nothing more than settling; it is the microwaveable burrito of sex.

Comments It’s freshman year. I make out the words “everclear” and “blackout drunk” over the din of awful house music blasting from the expensive-looking speakers in some fraternity house. I have no idea what’s going on, and neither do many of my fellow classmates, which doesn’t stop them from passing out drunk. I stayed for an hour or so — enough time to get asked, in the tradition of great cliches, if I were a lesbian, a prude, or a slut.
Enough time to see multiple strangers pair off in dark corners, trying and failing to stand up straight. Swap out vodka for beer, or cheap nameless grain liquor, fraternity houses for bars or clubs, and this scene was replicated over and over for four years. For an elite few at Penn, that night was fairly typical, including the confusion felt.
